Materials needed for Halloween Rocks
- Rocks – Look for smooth, small rocks that will fit in the palm of your hand.
- Yarn – You’ll want orange for the jack-o-lanterns and white for the mummies, but any color combinations will work for the monsters. This basic kind of yarn from Michaels works great.
- Googly eyes – These really give your rocks a funny personality!
- Hot glue/glue gun – I used hot glue to secure the yarn onto the rocks and used it to attach the eyes and mouths.
- Scraps of white and black paper – These are used to create faces for the jack-o-lanterns and mouths for the monsters.
- Scissors – You’ll need these to cut the yarn and cut out faces from he scrap paper.
How to make jack-o-lantern halloween rocks
- Choose your rock. Look for round and smooth rocks that will fit in the palm of your hand.
- Choose your yarn. You’ll need orange medium-width yarn, but any shade of orange will do.
- Attach yarn to your rock. Using a hot glue gun, add a dab of hot glue to the back of your rock. Secure the end of your orange yarn to it and then start tightly wrapping your rock with orange yarn by going around and around, in a circular motion, until all the rocks parts are covered. Add another dab of hot glue on the back to secure the end of the yarn. Snip off the excess yarn with scissors.
- Add a stem. Cut off a small (1/4 inch) piece from a flower stem or a small twig, and glue it to the top of the yarn-covered rock.
- Create a face. Cut out small shapes from black paper to create a jack-o-lantern face. I cut out triangles and a toothy grin for mine.
How to make mummy halloween rocks
- Choose your rock. Look for round and smooth rocks that will fit in the palm of your hand. An oval rock will work best.
- Choose your yarn. You’ll need white, medium-width yarn.
- Attach yarn to your rock. Using a hot glue gun, add a dab of hot glue to the back of your rock. Secure the end of your white yarn to it and then start wrapping your rock with the white yarn by going around and around, in a haphazard fashion, criss-crossing the yarn, so that several areas are still exposed. When you are finished wrapping your rock, add another dab of hot glue on the back to secure the end of the yarn. Snip off the excess yarn with scissors.
- Add eyes. Choose two small googly eyes and with hot glue, attach the eyes to an open space in between the white yarn towards the top of the rock (where the face would be). You want them to appear as if they are eyes peering out from the cloth that wraps a mummy.
How to make monster halloween rocks
- Choose your rock. Look for round and smooth rocks that will fit in the palm of your hand. A rectangle or oval rock work best for the monsters.
- Choose your yarn. Choose two colors. One for the face and one for the hair. And any color will do!
- Attach yarn to your rock. Using a hot glue gun, add a dab of hot glue to the back of your rock. Secure the end of your yarn to it and then start tightly wrapping your rock with the yarn by going around and around, until all surfaces of the rock are covered. When you are finished wrapping your rock, add another dab of hot glue on the back to secure the end of the yarn. Snip off the excess yarn with scissors.
- Add hair. Choose a second color of yarn for the hair. Wrap the yarn several times around your four fingers (about 20 times). Tie a knot in the middle and slide off of your fingers. Cut the end directly across from the knot and spread out the yarn, so that all the pieces are pointing up, so it resembles wild looking hair. Add a dab of hot glue at the very top of the rock and attach the mop of hair.
- Add face. Choose one large googly eye or two smaller ones and attach them in the middle of the rock, using hot glue. Then, with black paper, cut out a mouth and with white paper, cut out teeth. Assemble the month by gluing the teeth onto the black mouth, then attach it to the rock, under the eyes, where a mouth would go.
