This Flower Fireworks craft is a simple flower stamping project that will create a really vibrant and fun piece of art, just perfect for the Fourth of July. Both kids and adults will enjoy this one!
Wow, can you believe the Fourth of July is only two weeks away?! Summer is flying by. We usually take a long road-trip to spend the Fourth of July with my in-laws in the Midwest. We swim in their pool, grill out, and watch a big fireworks display at the town park. It’s one of our favorite summer traditions, but this year, circumstances are much different and we’ve decided to stay home. I’m sure a lot of you will be adjusting your usual holiday plans too. So, if you can’t catch any real firework displays this year, you can just make your own!
What you need to make flower fireworks
- Fresh flowers
- Paint
- Small paintbrushes
- Paper bowl
- Scissors
- Glue
- White paper
- Black paper
How to make a flower fireworks picture
- Pick flowers – First, you will need to collect a small bundle of various fresh flowers to use. These will work as the stamp you dip in paint to create the fireworks. We had the best luck with the pink Iceplant flowers we have growing in our yard, but Baby’s Breath, Yarrow, Daisies, Lavender and many other flowers would work. Most flowers would work fine, so just have fun making your choices!
- Prepare paint – You will need to squirt several bright paint colors into a paper bowl or plate. Crayola Washable Paint works great, and makes cleanup easy. Once you have at least four different colors in a bowl, grab a small paintbrush and carefully swirl the colors together. Swirl just enough to create a swirly effect, but no so much that they completely combine.
- Start stamping flowers – Now, grab a piece of white paper and choose a flower you’d like to use as your stamp. Dip the flower into the swirled paint and then start stamping it all over the white paper. These stamped flowers should start resembling fireworks in the sky. Create big firework bursts or tiny ones, stamp several, or just a few. Make your fireworks however you like, just try to fill up the entire piece of white paper.
- Create a landscape silhouette – As your paint dries, you can create a landscape silhouette to use on your firework painting. You could create a cityscape or a mountain-scape. We couldn’t choose, so we made both! With a pencil, draw a silhouette at the bottom of the page. Cut it out and use it as a template as you cut out the silhouette shape from a piece of black paper.
- Glue the silhouette onto firework painting – After you have cut out your landscape silhouette, flip it over and add glue to the back. Carefully, place it at the bottom of the fireworks painting and press it firmly until it sticks.
- Create a frame – You’re almost done! All you need to do now is create a black frame for your artwork, which will really help the fireworks stand out. Grab two pieces of black construction paper and turn them both horizontally. Stagger them on top of each other until they are the width you desire. Once the size is right, glue the two pieces together. And then add glue to the back of the white fireworks picture and press firmly into the center of the two pieces of black paper.
What’s to love about flower fireworks
- Simple craft – This is a simple craft to put together with just a few materials that you probably already have on hand.
- Nature based – This is a natured based craft because it uses real flowers, just like the Blooming Twig Trees craft we did a few months ago. I love flower and nature-based crafts because it gets my kids outside and connected to their natural surroundings.
- Creative – You can really make this art project your own. Maybe your kids go wild on the fireworks or maybe they’d prefer to add only a few. Either way, just have fun with it!
- Holiday/seasonal craft – This is a fun way to celebrate the Fourth of July. I think we can all agree the fireworks are the most exciting part to this holiday, and this craft really centers on that exciting part of Independence Day. Also, creating art based on a holiday really connects our children with the current season we are experiencing.
