This Christmas Mobile is a perfect holiday craft that will add a nice touch to your regular holiday decor. And you can keep it as simple or creative as you like!
From making the clay ornaments to drying orange slices to picking out a place in our house to hang it, my kids loved every step of making this sweet little Christmas Mobile. I love it because you can really personalize it and make it however you like! We kept ours pretty simple, but you can go as elaborate and creative as you want to!
What you will need to make a Christmas Mobile
- Sticks – These are used to make the mobile base (or hanger). We chose two thick sticks that created an “X” at the top to hang things from, but you could use just one stick or several.
- Twine – We used natural brown twine for ours, but string or colorful yarn would work as well.
- Air-dry clay – Any kind of clay or even salt dough would work for this, but we like using white Crayola Air Dry Clay because it’s easy to work with and dries quickly (allow 24 hours for dry-time). You can find it in most stores or order it online here from Target.
- Cookie cutters – We used a small jam jar lid for our circle shape and a star cookie cutter, but you could make your clay ornaments using any cookie cutter shape you like!
- Stamps – We used individual letter stamps to create words to use on our circle ornaments, but you could stamp words, phrases, or use shapes or textures (like we did in our Lace Star Ornaments)! Or just leave them plain. Whatever you like!
- Other natural items – We added dried orange slices to ours, but you could add holly, pinecones, evergreen boughs, twigs, berries, etc. to yours!
How to make clay ornaments for a Christmas Mobile
- First, you’ll need to set up your works station with parchment paper, air dry clay, and a rolling pin. Then, take a medium sized ball of white air dry clay and flatten it with a rolling pin to about 1/8″ thick.
- Using cookie cutters or a round jar lid, cut out three round shapes and two or three additional festive shapes. We used a star cookie cutter for our extra shapes.
- Using a straw, create a hole at the top of the ornament big enough for a piece of twine to string through.
- Using alphabet stamps, carefully stamp the words “love” and “peace” and “joy” into the round ornaments. In the alternative, you could stamp other words or phrases or pictures.
- After you’ve cut out your ornaments and created your words or phrases on them, lay them on a baking sheet and let them sit out overnight. They should be hard and ready to use within 24 hours.
How to put together your christmas mobile
- First, pick out two thick sticks to use to create the base (or hanger) of your mobile.
- Then, with a dab of hot glue in the middle of the sticks, stick them together to create an “X” shape. Or instead, you could use one long stick and hang ornaments from that or you could have several different sticks staggered, hanging down the mobile.
- Once the glue dries and your stick base is dry firm, take some twine and wrap it several times around the middle of the “X” to reinforce the glue and also create a long string to hang it up with.
- After you tie of the twine, be sure to leave 6-12 inches of free twine to use to create a loop to hang it up with. Cut off the excess twine on the other (short) side.
- Now it’s time to hang your ornaments to your mobile base. Using the same twine or yarn you used to create the base of your mobile, measure out varying lengths and cut. Some should be long, some short, some in the middle. Then, take one end of the twine and string it through the hole in the ornament and tie a knot.
- Then take the other end and attach it to the stick base and tie a knot. Cut of the excess twine on either side. Follow the same steps until all of your ornaments are hung.
- Finally, find a place to hang up your mobile and enjoy!
