Flower Petal Playdough uses an easy small-batch playdough recipe and fresh flower petals to create lots of fun for your kids!
We make playdough pretty often, but this was the first time we added flower petals to it! The flowers petals gave it a burst of color and texture and made it even more fun to play with and create things. Read on for our small-batch playdough recipe and ideas of what to do with your Flower Petal Playdough.
What you need to for Flower Petal Playdough
- Ingredients for home-made playdough – White all-purpose flour, fine table salt, cream of tartar, water, and vegetable oil.
- Flower petals – We used petals from fresh flowers, but dried petals would work as well! Just be sure to choose bright, vibrant colors.
- Rubber spatula – Needed to mix the dough and and scrape the sides of the bowl.
- Mixing bowl – This is a small batch of playdough, so you do not need a very large bowl.
- Parchment paper – We use this to protect our workspace and for easy cleanup.
- Rolling pin – This really helps roll out the dough, but you could just use your fingers to flatten it.
- Cookie cutters – Using cookie cutters is an easy way to create shapes with your flower petal playdough, but they’re option of course.
Small-Batch Playdough for Flower Petal Playdough
- Add dry ingredients: Mix 1 cup all-purpose flour, 1/4 cup fine table salt, and 1 teaspoon cream of tartar in a small mixing bowl.
- Add wet ingredients: Create a well in the dry mixture, then pour 1/2 cup of boiling hot water and 1/2 tablespoon of vegetable oil into it and mix well with a rubber spatula.
- Mix and knead: Mix the dough well with a rubber spatula and then once it cools down, roll it out onto a piece of parchment paper and knead with your hands until it looks and feels like playdough. You may need to add a little extra flour or water to reach the desired consistency.
How to play with Flower Petal Playdough
- Roll out dough: Flatten the dough with your hands or a rolling pin.
- Add petals: Just like we did for our Nature Paper Dolls, Rainbow Flower Wall Hangings, and Nature Bookmarks, we just love using flowers for our crafts and activities. This activity is no different! Sprinkle fresh or dry flower petals all over the playdough. Using your fingers or the rolling pin, push the petals into the dough. Work the petals into the dough well by folding the dough and rolling it out flat again or by kneading it thoroughly.
- Cut out shapes: Grab your favorite cookie cutter and cut out shapes.
How to Make Flower Petal Playdough

- 1/4 cup fine table salt
- 1 teaspoon cream of tartar
- 1/2 cup hot water
- 1/2 tablespoon vegetable oil

Instructions
1. Make the playdough by mixing 1 cup all-purpose flour, 1/4 cup fine table salt, and 1 teaspoon cream of tartar in a small mixing bowl. Then, create a well in the middle of the dry mixture, then pour 1/2 cup of boiling hot water and 1/2 tablespoon of vegetable oil into it and mix well with a rubber spatula.
2. Once the dough cools, knead it with your hands, then form it into a ball.
3. Transfer dough to a flat surface covered with parchment paper. Flatten the dough with your hands or a rolling pin.
4. Once your dough is flat and smooth, sprinkle fresh or dry flower petals all over the playdough. Using your fingers or the rolling pin, push the petals into the dough. Work the petals into the dough well by folding the dough and rolling it out flat again or by kneading it thoroughly.
5. Finally, grab your favorite cookie cutter and cut out shapes.
Notes
Store your playdough in a ziplock bag to keep it from drying out.
