These cute salt dough Shamrock Wall Hangings are so fun and easy for kids to make. They’re also naturally green, so they make a perfect craft and decoration for St. Patrick’s Day!
You’ll love this fun St. Patrick’s Day craft. If your kid is anything like mine, they’ll really get into this project – from making the salt dough to cutting out shapes and stringing it up. The salt dough recipe is an easy one, but it includes a secret ingredient. Read on to find out what it is!
What you’ll need to make these Shamrock Wall Hangings
- Twine or thin yarn – When choosing the twine or yarn to use for your wall hanging, go with an earth-tone color (we chose cream) and be sure it is thin enough for two strands to pass through each hole you make on the shamrock shapes.
- Scissors – A sharp pair of scissors is needed to cut the twine or thin yarn.
- Shamrock cookie cutter – A shamrock shaped cookie cutter is pretty essential for this project, because it is a St. Patrick’s Day craft. I got these ones online on Amazon, but I bet you could easily find them in any big box store throughout the month of March.
- Straw – A straw is needed to create two holes in each shamrock to string the twine through.
- Book or piece of cardboard – You’ll need this to make the tassel on the wall hanging. I used a small book, but a piece of cardboard would work as well.
- Baking sheet – You’ll need a cookie sheet and parchment paper to bake the salt dough shape.
- All-purpose white flour – We used the cheapest all-purpose flour we could find for this project. It’s not for eating, so the quality doesn’t need to be great.
- Salt – You’ll want fine-grain table salt for this craft, not the larger grain sea salt.
- Water – Regular lukewarm tap water works great.
- Cooking oil – Any kind of cooking oil will work as long as it is in liquid form.
- Secret ingredient – Drum roll, please! The secret ingredient that makes these shamrock shapes naturally green is kale powder! You could use kale powder or spinach powder.
How to make green salt dough for Shamrock Wall hangings
- Pour 2 cups of all purpose white flour into a large mixing bowl.
- Add 1 cup of fine grain table salt to the flour in a large mixing bowl.
- Add 1/2 cup of kale or spinach powder to the flour and salt.
- Mix the dry ingredients together well.
- Add 2 tablespoons of liquid cooking oil to 2 1/2 cups of tap water. Pour the water/oil mixture into the powder mixture. And stir until well-combined. Add more liquid until it is the same consistency of playdough.
- Kneed the dough for 5-10 minutes.
- Roll the dough out flat until it’s about the width of a pencil.
- Using a shamrock cookie cutter, cut out several shamrock shapes out of the dough.
- Using a straw, create a hole at the top of your shamrock and at the base for the twine to pass through.
- Transfer on to a baking sheet covered with parchment paper. Bake at 250 degrees for 20 minutes. Then flip the shapes and bake for 15-20 minutes more.
- Let the shapes cool to the touch before creating your wall hanging.
- Optional – You could also make green salt dough beads to add to your wall hanging. To do so, you simply follow the same steps above. However, instead of rolling out the dough and cutting out shapes, just create marble sized balls and shove a straw through them to create a hole. Bake at the same temperature and length as the shamrock shapes.
How to make tassels for the Shamrock Wall Hangings
- Find a small book or a piece of cardboard about 4 inches wide. Hold the end of the twine against the book and start wrapping the twine tightly around the book. Wrap it 10-15 times, depending on how thick you’d like your tassel to be.
- After you’ve wrapped the twine around the book several times, cut off the end of the twine.
- Gather a long piece of twine, about 2 or 3 feet. Pass the end through the top of the twine wrapped around the book. Knot it tightly, leaving two identical long strings. Cut the bottom side of the wrapped yarn, pull away from the book.
- Take a 5 or 6 inch piece of twine and tie a tight knot about a 1/2 inch below the top.
- Wrap the string several times and the tie it off. Trim off the excess twine.
- Thread both ends of the long pieces of twine through a shamrock shape. Start by sending the twine through the bottom front hole, around the back and through the back top hole. Do the same for two additional shamrock shapes.
- Tie a knot at the top of the wall hanging above the top shamrock shape. Add wooden or clay beads if desired. Tie a loop at the top of the wall hanging and trim off excess twine.
